IT is not so much that the pole flips; rather a new dipole grows in another orientation, and the old one dies out. As far as I know (and I've not kept up with the topic) we don't have a very clear idea of how long this process takes. A hundred years, a thousand? And there is no reason to assume there is a set rate of change, either. Personally, I doubt it would take place faster than a human lifetime, much less on a single day. There are huge, long lived forces at work in the core, they don't change overnight.
I know of no study that has ever linked a geomagnetic reversal to enhanced volcanic activity. I rather doubt there is a connection.
I know of no reason the planet would have changed it's direction of rotation, except for the impact that created the moon. Think of the forces that would require! The angluar momentum of the planet is huge, think of stopping it and then getting it spinning in the other direction. Haven't these people ever spun a heavy globe about its axis and try to stop it?
One thing I have noticed with the Impending Catsrophists, they often don't understand the difference between the axis of rotation of the planet and the geomagnetic poles. Years ago, I was asked to watch a program with some friends who wanted my scientific opinion. The program was a claim that the earth would stop spinning in the current direction, and start spinning in the other sense. This was called the zero point, and the presentation claimed it was a result of the sifting magnetic field. I damn near fell off my chair. I felt sorry for my friends who were sold on the idea from their first viewing, and I had to, gently as possible, tell tham that the whole idea was not based in any science I was familiar with. Utter bullshit, in other words.
It is only going to get worse, you know, as the feared date approaches. Look for increased silliness. The ultimate proof will be the typical day after, unless the fear makes people actually lose their minds.
