More Science than space, but the Quaternary - our current geological epoch - now officially began 2.6 million years ago, some 800,000 years earlier than the previous line in time. Nothing changed dating wise, but the Geological brains decided a more distinctive, global time-boundary was needed. Thus the onset of our current Ice Age at 2.6 mya was chosen.
