Last week-end, I joined a party to inaugurate a new astronomy club in the Ardennes.
I gave a speech about Apollo, another one about light pollution and another one about science, politics and religion.
He said "claiming there is no life in the Universe besides the Earth is going against science, is anthropocentric and just like it was when we thought the Earth was the center of the universe..."
Seems logic......but I don't agree.
In fact, we have no clue, so far, about life elsewhere in the universe...Claiming there is life is an act of faith. Science has no definite answer.
And, also, we know our own solar system is an exception (earthlike planets in the habitablezone in a circular orbit) while we thought otherwise until all those exoplanets showed up!
And, looking for life elsewhere is looking for something similar to what we find on Earth, which is behaving anthropocentrically (similar to Earth) while we know all stars, worlds are different from each other!
We deseperately look for our image out there and keep finding the difference!
Which humbles us because we never thought of those different things.
But they're there, always beyond our imagination! We're so insignificant.
Life all over the universe ?
