Those who believe their cause is just see no problem in forcing others to conform. After all, they 'know better' than you and so you must obey them.
Liberals need to take a lesson from the way they seek energy independence from the Middle East. If the Middle East rich were Americans, the answer would be simple - tax them and confiscate their abundance. But because they *can't* do this they realize dependency is a bad thing. Yet the exact same dependency is going on here when they make the poor dependent upon the rich for paying for government services, spreading the wealth and all the rest. Dependency is only evil when one can't use a gun on the provider and write a bogus bill to make looting the law of the land. (And the looters realize they can provide their own meal ticket by backing this 'philosophy')
They still need to learn this lesson. They want to help the poor, but they don't quite understand the handout *doesn't* help him - it cripples him - just as surely as energy dependency for foreign oil cripples our economy and wealth production. Socialism is the same trap. Instead of producing MORE wealth - you simply spread out existing wealth and claim this is a solution. Every growing nation with this solution eventually starves or turns to capitalism (like China) to generate real wealth.
But again, today's youth (largely) don't care enough to actually think it all the way through. They haven't been exposed to the types of literature and experienced first hand the failure of liberalism in so many arenas which could provide them this insight. The fact that literacy continues to decline despite the chokehold liberals have upon the educational establishment, shows that real learning has come from outside the educational structures, in the form of books and in-depth conversations between literate people. Folks like Elbert Hubbard come to mind, who were considered renegades and liberal, yet were more literate and conversant in all manners of topics, people and history than nearly the vast majority of 'college graduates' of today.
Liberalism desperately needs a reformation. Compulsory solutions, by their very nature, are imbalanced and forced. Natural, free markets are far better at creating abundancy and solutions to the vast diversity of needs and wants in the world. Liberalism has a place in a greater capitalist infrastructure. This is what most 'civilized' parts of the world long ago already discovered and which many, born into this abundance, take for granted and fail to understand how wealth came into existence.
