Maybe California, too. There's a mall around here like the one described at the end of the article. Signs touting "coming stores" that have been up for a couple of years. Sections blocked off so the empty stores don't show.

Another huge development that was to be the centerpiece of downtown Sunnyvale is frozen, having run out of money about two-thirds of the way through construction. Huge, clean, beautiful buildings, almost done. But not quite. The Macys and Target at either end, last remnants of the old mall that was demolished, are bravely open, and still doing good business next to the shiny ghost town. I think Target's even remodeling.

This kind of thing bothers the hell out of me. As someone who has been in on business startups - and business failures - there are few things that are sadder to me than a new business that doesn't make it. I have hopes that someone will pick up the slack eventually.
