Socialism is the byproduct of insufficient thought. When compared to warring individualists, powerful kings and the concept of royalty or divine right, socialism is attractive.
Thought out further one realizes that it is just another form of individual oppression and a yoke around the necks of the masses.
That's the problem. Socialists are bright enough to realize the first part, but keep falling back on comparison when justifying it in the face of its true nature. Eventually the brightest ones escape the socialist fantasy and realize regulated capitalism is the best system for freedom of expression, prosperity and personal well being.
Production and progress needs competition. Competition and socialism don't mix well. Individuality and socialism are also at odds. Unhappy people will embrace anything to empower themselves when they are downtrodden, poor or oppressed. History has proven the path to freedom and prosperity is not found in a socialist-centric governmental system.
