You are used to Blue Ridges, which are more widely spaced. Where I was working was a series of folded and faulted sedimentary layers uplifted to a vertical position. The distance between the ridges is based upon the thickness of the sedimentary rock layers, in this case on the order of a few hundred feet. Easy to pack a couple of these "hog-backs" into a half mile. If you like, I could post a topographic profile of the area in question.

I wasn't calling into question your own strange sighting, just talking 'bout my own.

Using 2mil plastic sheeting, I could probably make a pretty large tetrahedron and get it to float, but ever since the balloon boy thing, I don't dare to try!
