This is the second pair of Iridium flares I have just accidentally been looking in the right place at the right time to see. They must not be very rare, but they certainly get your attention!
Whenever I see something weird in the sky, I have a habit of running inside, and writing it down, while it’s fresh in my mind.
Even when trying to be careful and observant, it’s interesting how far off I was on the time interval.
Perception altered by excitement, I guess.
Me:
Phoenix, Arizona
19 December, 2009. 5:55 MST
Observed what appeared to be, two Iridium satellites passing south to north over central Phoenix. (Approximately 70 degrees above Eastern horizon, heading South to North)
First satellite flared very prominently at approximate zenith, followed immediately by second satellite, which mimicked the first flare.
Trailing satellite was approximately 10 - 12 Lunar diameters behind. (Moon was up at the time, for a convenient reference.
Interval between flares was approximately 6 - 7 seconds.
