I'm using an older version of AIM for chat since I'm not impressed with the current version, and got an e-mail today, supposedly from AIM, saying my account would be deleted if I didn't update.
I noted the address (do NOT go there!):
update.aol.com.pikoe.com.pl/products/aimController.php?code=6443563173248524832643549443869
The strange stuff at the end is a classic warning sign. ".pl" may indicate a Poland site. AOL is not based in Poland.
This is the actual AOL download site:
products.aim.com
That's it. Very simple and straightforward.
I checked my shields, then clicked the link. The defenses blocked two viruses trying to get in, even before I clicked the "update now" button (which I didn't). The website looked quite authentic.
Be careful out there.
