Almost a zen question

Why doesn't all the popcorn pop at the same time?

Don't think of a subduction zone as a single fault plane between two tectonic plates. There are thousands of faults, and each fault could be seen as a kernel of corn waiting to pop, once the conditions are right. Some never pop.
