Tax burden update

Here:

^Tax Day is a dreaded deadline for millions, but for nearly half of U.S. households it's simply somebody else's problem.

About 47 percent will pay no federal income taxes at all for 2009.^

One of the standard wheezes I get when I point out that our tax system has most taxes being paid by the very rich, is that, well, the very rich get many times more benefits from the glorious State so it's all fair, right?

Leaving aside that this idea has no objective backing at all, what do you say when half of Americans get all the government goodies and pay nothing at all for them?

Payroll taxes? Remember that payroll taxes go to two specific services that have nothing to do with all the other goodies. At least in theory.
