If you told that story in a room full of parents of children over 18, you would get a lot of sympathetic nods.
My own kids have put me and my wife through some first-class wringers. Nothing like going off to Afghanistan, but it may be they just haven't thought of it yet. Keep in mind that your daughter's behavior can be a sign of a strong personality willing to stretch out, explore, and take risks. Such people are not common, and a certain amount of pride might be appropriate. In between the cold sweats, of course. A well-lived life is not always a safe or comfortable one, and she probably has an impressive future in front of her.
My own parents are sympathetic when I have kid trouble, but I can't help thinking about the cactus patches I dragged them through when I was younger, and I suspect that there's a certain amount of sweet revenge in their attitude somewhere.
