One of my favorite pasttimes when visiting Hawaii was to watch crabs like that, popping out of the sand between waves, running over to find a tidbit of some kind, then whipping back to their little holes. Don't know if those were actual Mole Crabs or not.
Surf animals are very durable. The sea snails of our local tidepools can actually be stood on without crushing them. The land snails in my garden squish quite easily.
