The statue of "Christ the Redeemer" down in Rio de Janeiro has probably gotten smacked by lightning more than a few times. I think the trick is lightning rods, and more durable statue materials.
Before lightning rods church steeples - often the highest building in town in those days - used to get nailed a lot, raising theological questions.
