The story (probably apocryphal) goes that after Ben Franklin invented the lightning rod, the Navy asked him to install one on the mainmast of one of its frigates. Unfortunately, the ship was hit by lightning before the equipment was properly grounded, killing a seaman who had been sent aloft to rig it.
The question I've never heard answered is what happened to the second sailor to be ordered to climb the rigging and install it.
