I never liked the idea of flashy special uniforms for elite units, green berets, cavalry Stetsons or such other manipulative adolescent crap used to artificially manufacture "unit cohesion". The whole idea of a uniform is that you are part of one team, not divided into competing little gangs wearing their own street colors. There are already badges, insignia and other devices worn on uniforms to designate special skills, unit, rank, service, contributions, and decorations. That should be enough.
The one thing sailors liked about their uniforms is that they hadn't changed appreciably for over a century, were instantly recognizeable, traditional, and every sailor could wear his in a distinctive, unique and personalized way. Not only that, the Navy uniform, when folded regulation, just fit into a standard ship's locker and was self-pressing.
We all had our own style of knotting our neckerchief, shaping our white hat, fitting our jumper, and letting our trousers ride on our hips to suit our frame. And regulations allowed us certain latitude in having them tailored, too. Navy issue trousers are NOT bell-bottoms, they are just baggy. But we were allowed to have them pegged so they had a hint of flare at the hem. When we went ashore on liberty, we were squared away. We all looked and moved like Gene Kelly.
