The Supreme Court beats around the bush when it comes to the idea of preserving liberty in regards to a possible government tyranny. They are looking at gun ownership only as a means of self-defense. The founders saw it differently:
"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them." (Richard Henry Lee, Virginia delegate to the Continental Congress, initiator of the Declaration of Independence, and member of the first Senate, which passed the Bill of Rights.)
It should be obvious Lee wasn’t talking about self defense.
The notion that we might someday have to defend our country from an enemy from within is not just some redneck Red Dawn fantasy. There are some that say it’s ludicrous to even imagine an armed citizenry fighting the full force of the US military but there is a prime example of this being done in Afghanistan, where 90,000 troupes equipped with our best technology have not been able to put down an insurrection of kitchen chemists and Red Green bomb assemblers. And one of the reasons the fighting was especially difficult in the beginning?... A well armed population.
BTW, Where do you keep your Earthquake preparedness kit?
