Go back and look at Truman's history. Are you aware that he did not have any college degree at all? He had been VP for less than three months when he took over the presidency.
I would much rather have someone who had to learn a few ropes in the job who was committed to individual rights and freedom than the smartest socialist in the world. Or worse, someone who is convinced that they are the smartest socialist in the world, but isn't by a long shot.
That whole "heartbeat away from the presidency" thing was a load of crap anyway.
