I've been thinking the same thing recently, and I think I'll give it a try.
I love cable/sat, watch it too much, and like the NYT writer, totally guilty of channel surfing. But when I take a real hard look at the selection available from my provider, maybe 10%, at best, are things I want to watch.
With online TV, I can watch every flavor of Star Trek, B5, Farscape, Space: Above and beyond, etc..
A couple years ago, I got hooked on a BBC series, 'Midsomer Murders', broadcast here on A&E.
Well A&E dropped it, and no more US broadcast. Was ready to start buying DVD's, which would be very expensive, when I noticed that it's becoming available online. Other BBC stuff I love, also available, the Jeremy Brett 'Sherlock Holmes', and a series called 'Lovejoy'.
I will miss Turner Classic Movies,...but maybe it's available online too?
Thanks for getting me started. :)
