I guess I write for all those people who don't usually read SF/Fantasy. I know that when I first started reading in the genre, I had a million questions about things that the authors just assumed anyone would understand. So, it's kind of fine line deciding what is too much information that will insult the intelligence of the normal reader and how much to explain so that the uninitiated will understand. I've had a few people on writers' sites to which I belong review some of my SF short shorts and they'll say something to the effect, 'I don't usually like Science Fiction and avoid it but I enjoyed this story.' I love making converts.
I could have left that description out on this site since there's absolutely no one here who wouldn't know what it was, but it leads into the sentence about his intending to "remain whole."
Maybe in this day and age I don't need to worry about non-SF readers. Their understanding of a term like "fraggie" would perhaps be better than mine might have been 40 or so years ago.
Thanks for bringing it up, Nick. I'll keep that in mind in future.
