Flame » in reply to The "War Deficit"

Re: Depends on how you look at it.

Remember, that blue section isn't a percentage of spending. It's a percentage of deficit. For example, the actual 2007 budget was about $2.7 billion. You can look at that chart and work out how much of a bar that high would be occupied by the Iraq spending.

If you look at the chart, it's interesting to speculate on how the deficit would have done if we hadn't been attacked in 2001, with the resulting wars and economic damage. Without Iraq, the 2007 deficit - $160 billion - is almost gone.

If you include both wars (see Table 1 here, the Iraq war budget for that year was $131.2 billion and Afghanistan was $39.2 billion. Add in "enhanced security," and we have a total of $170.9 billion dedicated to post-9/11 security spending.

As for Afghanistan, remember that the leftist talking point through most of Bush's administration was that Iraq was the "unnecessary" war, and that Afghanistan was a proper response to an actual attack on the United States. They were lying about this, of course. Leftists didn't like the Afghanistan War either - something that was more evident prior to the Iraq invasion - but couldn't figure out how to sell that to the average American.

So, most of their rhetoric on spending concentrated on Iraq.
