I purchased it straight from Apple, and when I called the Apple Store support people, I asked if they had any deals for anyone who bought the old one only days before, and pointed out that a heads-up on new versions when I placed the order would have been nice.
No joy on special deals, but the Apple Store guy didn't sound any happier about it than I did (I suspect I wasn't the only complainer). He said that his people are kept in the dark too until the official announcements.
