When I got my current PC, it had XP 64 on it. I immediately switched to Vista 64 before I added any software at all. I did not want to deal with an operating system upgrade after I had dozens of heavy-duty applications installed.
Good thing, too. When Windows 7 came out I installed it, and the upgrade path from Vista was quite smooth. Last time I looked there WAS no upgrade path from XP. If an XP user wants Win7, they have to scrub their system and start over.
