Most new jobs created by new companies! Well, duh.
The header: "Big business gets the headlines, but thousands of upstart companies do most of the heavy lifting in the American economy." By not thinking about it, you allowed the article writers to deliberately muddle the concepts of "old" and "big" to convince you that "Big Business" is no good.
A lot of people have jobs at old, big companies. Old jobs support families as well as new ones.
In 2004, most recent report I could find, the Census Bureau reported that about half of all paid employee jobs in the U.S. were in companies with more than 500 employees. 37 percent of those jobs were in companies with more than 2,500 employees. I don't know how "new" these large companies were at the time, but we know they were big. These numbers obviously do not include self-employed individuals (me!)
Wal-Mart alone has over 2 million employees.
Incidentally, as a sidebar, this is the sole reason the company is on liberal shitlists. Those employees aren't funneling hundreds of thousands of union dues dollars into Democratic Party coffers. Every anti-Wal-Mart group I've found so far has had deep union pockets behind it.
