My ex was in the USAF stationed there. I enjoyed my experience although a lot was inconvenient. But their conveniences have pretty much caught up with the US now, I think. When I was there, I had a tiny refrigerator, a freezer that would hold a lb. of hamburger and some ice, a wringer washer and no dryer which meant all my clothes ended up with coal dust permeating them. Coal was still the main source of heat back in the late 60's, early 70's. I had to throw away all my clothes when I returned to the US.
But damn I loved their comedy, their pubs, their singers, their beer and the butcher who delivered pheasant to my doorstep. I could buy fresh fish off the back of the fishmonger's truck once a week. And I'd kill for some of their fish n' chips. Ours is a very pale imitation.
