While I do agree that CFL's aren't much better in the health hazard area, they certainly do save more energy. Personally, I think LEDs are the way to go.
Oh, and even if people pay for the extra energy they use, they're still using more energy than their neighbors. Power plants can only supply so much, and thinking you can just sweep the brownouts under the rug with money is just dead wrong.
