The beheadings story is a pretty good sample of the switched party story you hypothesize. And it never made it to any first page that I saw in California. I don't think was ever on the network news on channel NBC. I never heard any mention of it on TV news, anywhere.

And I am sorry, but it was a much wierder story. Honestly, don't you think so?
