The scope of the mess he inherited in Af-Pak cannot be understated. This situation was left to worsen dramatically while Bush-Cheney pursued their stupid war in Iraq. Obama had few options other than escalate or disengage. He's done the former in Af-Pak and the latter in Iraq. Actually considerable progress has been made in Helmand and Kandahar provinces recently, and the Taliban have lost a lot there. Drone attacks in Pakistan have dramatically increased, making Taliban leadership positions a very short term career opportunity. If we can get the ANA in place we can disengage our main forces as we have in Iraq and pursue the special forces option Biden pushed for early in the Admin.

Obama ended the horribly anti-American-values policy of torturing prisoners. We haven't closed Gitmo specifically because the extremely dangerous prisoners there were tortured by the previous Admin and now because of that cannot be tried without real risk of getting off. If you break the law, the law is no longer a tool on your side.

Sorry, but two years is not enough time to clean up all the disasters the GOP left Obama with.
