Not all liberals are Democrats, i.e. members of the Democratic Party. Some are Green Party, some are independent. Not all Democrats are liberal either, but that's getting to be a damn small group. The Democratic Party of my youth isn't one bit like the modern one. There are more socialists in the modern Democratic party than there have ever been before. Used to be you could track the links between socialist organizations and things like the Progressive Caucus, but they've worked pretty hard on scrubbing them since the internet.
I do tend to use "Democrats" when what I actually mean is "Democratic Party leadership." Obviously I'm not all that worried about the Democratic farmers where my Dad lives taking over my life. Who they vote for is the problem.
When Republicans forget their principles, they need to be primaried out, or opposed. That's how the process is supposed to work.
