Have a Eurovan. 1999. Fully tricked out by Winabaggo with 'fridge, sink, poptop, furnace... it's a frelling great vehicle. Apart from camping, I can haul fullsheets of plywood or 10' 2x4's if I take out the back seat. I hacked a Tulle bike rack to slide into the tracks of the back seat so we can haul our mountain bikes around without them getting trashed on a outside rack. The six cylinder engine allows me to keep up with, and even pass, the other cars on steep mountain passes. Great turn radius, as you point out. I've slept in it when the outside temperature was 20 degrees F, and I was quite comfortable.
What can I say, I like the van. I get offers to buy it all the time, people actually knock on the front door asking if I want to sell it. One guy came back twice trying to convince me to sell it to him. Nope. I don't sell cars until they fall apart and this one is nowhere close to that. Given the low miles on the thing (I don't commute) I could probably get what I paid for it, a decade later.
It is too bad they don't make them anymore, due, as you say, to this stupid tariff law. But this new design is hardly a replacement for the Eurovan. And note, it is just a design, there are no plans to produce it.
I wouldn't buy one. And I don't see how this could be converted into a camper van at all. The extra weight would kill the range. And how could you recharge the thing while camping in the sticks? Photovoltaics? Probably not enough amps from a system that is small enough to carry with you to charge this battery pack.
