Re: So which Republican would YOU vote for?

Well, I assume you mean "their politics aside", and I'll go along on that assumption. I'll rephrase your question as "which of these guys would you NOT vote for even if their politics were acceptable to you, that is, which would you reject for other reasons than politics?

Trump is not a serious candidate, he's in it for the publicity. I like him personally as a colorful character with a great sense of humor, but he's a businessman, which means like lawyers, he already has one strike against him. I know, most politicians are either businessmen or lawyers, but his recent pandering to the Birthers is unacceptable.

Romney is a Mormon, not that I have anything against Mormons, I just can't take any candidate seriously who follows an organized religion, any more than I could fall in love with a woman with formal religious affiliation. No, I don't think belief in a deity disqualifies anybody, (after all, they might even be right!). But anyone who honestly thinks he belongs to the same church as god is not playing with a full deck. So why have I supported candidates who belonged to churches in the past? Because they were lying. Nobody can get elected in this country unless they belong to a church. You have to lie about church membership if you want to run. The founding fathers were an exception, but that was, after all, the Age of Reason.

Gingrich is that rarest of all birds, a conservative intellectual. But he's also a totally unprincipled opportunist and demagogue, and worst of all, he's a very smart one. "Conservative intellectual" is not necessarily an oxymoron, and there are honest and decent conservative intellectuals, like WF Buckley and G Will, but Newt ain't one of them.

Huckabee was my favorite, among other things, he's a pretty fair blues bassist, but his latest pandering to the Birthers disqualifies him. That's even worse than his religious affiliations.

The girls, Palin and Bachmann, and the little ex-Wiccan dumpling (I can't remember her name), are fun to look at, but dumber than a sack full of hammers. Honky tonk wimmen, gimme, gimme, gimme, the honky tonk blues.

There's a host of other young, attractive Republicans out there with Presidential aspirations and pretensions, but I know little about them. They all are sounding the usual Tea Party litany, and they all look alike as well, they are quite difficult to tell apart. They all remind me of the kind of guy who would steal your lab notebook in chemistry class, but that may be an unfair criticism. I doubt if any of them ever took chemistry.

No, I'm not picking on the Righties, there are Republicans out there I like and respect, I may not agree with their politics, but I really think they are selling the program they think is best for the country, not the one that will appeal to the knuckle-draggers and hair-on-their-teeth troglodyte Right. They are good men, intelligent, and reasonable. I could deal with them, and trust them, so not surprisingly, none of them seems to be doing well among other Republicans these days. I'm thinking of Pat Buchanan, Joe Scarborough and Richard Lugar, and I'm sure there are others, but they don't come to mind right off.

I guess I never thought I'd see the day when I would look back on Barry Goldwater with nostalgia, even sincere admiration. They don't make Conservatives like that any more.
