The "Great Society" is killing us. Right now. Similar ideas are killing nations in Europe and elsewhere.
^There's absolutely nothing wrong with smaller government, minimum interference with the private sector, lower taxes, law and order, strong national defense, and most of the other things in the conservative program. The problem is that they can all be carried too far. Rejecting what modern conservatives want is not the same thing as denouncing conservative principles, and certainly not the same as embracing their polar opposites. But we've had this pointless conversation before.^
Sometimes it's like talking to a PETA member who wears baby seal boots.
All I've ever asked, is at what point do we stop moving steadily and rapidly toward one of those polar opposites? Sixty percent of the Federal government right now is raw wealth redistribution, mostly New Deal/Great Society entitlements. The Federal government is four and a half times the size it was in 1964. Even you have to realize we long ago passed anything resembling any kind of midpoint in this regard.
Yet many liberals I talk to now are still saying "we just don't have enough socialism yet." Not in those words, except maybe in regards to health care, but that's the meaning.
