Space/Science » in reply to Moon mining?

Excellent.

I'll enjoy watching their progress.

Plenty of challenges await them, especially in the separation of the mined material. REE's are notoriously difficult to extract.

Since both water and gravity are important in the milling process I cannot wait to see how they tackle the low g and lack of water problem. Many ores are separated using floation with an emuslifier. How's that going to work?

Ore can be milled dry, using ball mills, but the balls are heavy, and would have to be even more so on the lunar surface to get the job done.

Magnetic separation might prove effective, but you've got to get the whopping big magnets up there.

Still, this is exciting, and I applaud the effort, and the Google Prize that is helping.

Thanks Tom.
