^As for the education in "much simpler times", as I recall, conservatives back then weren't very happy with that either.^
Back then, almost everyone was what would now be considered "conservative."
In truth, the people unhappy with education back then were those who demanded we impose the "new ideas" that were coming out of academica. I wish I had a nickel for every "new concept" that got tried out on us and bombed during my high school years.
