Bullies take advantage of decent people's desire to be tolerant and fair. They misinterpret it as weakness and indecision, even cowardice, while their outrages are always justified because "right is on their side".

These are the same people that when it hits the fan and they finally realize the jig is up, rush westward and surrender to Eisenhower.
