<I can remember when people wondered who would ever need the power of a 80386 on their desktop. Surely only business servers would ever need that kind of power. What with the growing bloat in software and Windows as CPU sink, we'll see 10 GHz home systems within a few years. By ten years from now, a 10 GHz system will seem as slow as a low end Pentium or 80486 does today
I strongly agree Lary, microsoft is a strong force in the advancement of personaly computers. If they didn't make thier OS slower and more cumbersome then there woudl be no need to upgrade computers. . . and new computers that come with the latest windows on them drives more sales.
when I finnally moved to windows its took five seconds to view a directory. TO VIEW A STINKING DIRECTORY! thsi took a microsecond in dos, hello?!
five seconds of listening to the hardrive grind and grind and grind. . .
Furthermore my hardrives under linux NEVER GRIND. Theres neverbeen a windows machine that I've encountered that doesnt have a griding sound emenating from its hardrive.
just look at hardrive space:
win95: 200 megs
win98: 400-600 megs
winME: 1- 1.2 gigs
with time they gradially fill up 50% mroe of thier space unless you go get soemting like window wiper.
and what about microsoft Word?! Every issue of that has an order of magnitude bloat to it:

office 2000:

on the other hand I have linux, on this machine. on my laptop it take up anywhere from 27 megs like the one my 386 laptop to 1.2 gigs (max redhat install) depending on what all you want and if you wanna bother cutting down the kernel.
