I'll be the crabs are just looking for something to grab to get out. I really, really doubt they are able to formulate the idea that Ivan there is about to get out and lead a happy life, damn him, and I for one am not going to let him!

Or, if we want, we can always think that the other crabs realize that outside the pot, as grim as it is, there is nothing but a store floor, scary people, dogs, cats, no ponds. They may want to be saving their fellow crab from a fate worse than death.

Now people. They will do anything. Period.
