You noticed that little dichotomy, did you?

The Left, of course, is all for massive interference in individual freedoms when it suits their goals.

Again, as with every other leftist policy, government or otherwise, it's critical to look at the real goal of the policy, and not the professed goal. In this case the real goal has nothing to do with CO2, and everything to do with the leftist desire to destroy the private automobile as a transporation system.

Another good example: Social Security. Professed goal: provide retirement income for elderly. Real goal: take the most reliable voting group in America and make them totally dependent on a barely-sufficient government dole. The real goal, as always, is about gaining and keeping power in a centralized government.

Another one: radical environmentalism. Professed goal: cleaning up the environment. Real goal: destruction of capitalism, industry, and with any luck, the human race.

What is interesting about applying this Real Goal/Professed Goal analysis to government programs is that one realizes that many programs which are apparent failures when viewed according to their Professed Goals, are actually wild successes when viewed from their Real Goal--increasing the power of government. Try it yourself.
