Marxism as theory sounds good in principle

but it was never implemented in practice for several reasons. One reason is that those who chanted "all power to the people" really wanted all power given to people who chanted "all power to the people" (to quote Leo Rosten). Those who ran so-called Marxist governments talked about equality but somehow managed to set themselves up quite better than the poor masses. In virtually every case, they also set up repressive governments that were responsible for a tremendous amount of suffering and death.

Probably the biggest reason Marxism has repeatedly proven a dismal failure in the real world is that the Marxist concept is contrary to human nature. In the old Soviet Union, the workers used to joke, "They pretend to pay us and we pretend to work." Fundamentally, human self interest is a far more powerful motivator than dogma spouted by Marxist idealists.

Try looking at actual history rather than Marxist history. You'll find that it failed repeatedly simply because the whole concepts were fundamentally flawed. Theory is nice but actual history trumps it every time.
