Tom, you're turning into Carville candy, with a knee-jerk disagreement with anything you don't understand, unwilling to see even a glimmer of reason in some of the brightest people in the world if they don't have your political values.
(Which seem to be that anything which gets in the way of what you want to do should be completely, totally and absolutely eliminated. The hell with anyone else. And their "rights" are not "rights" if they get in the way of what I want. And you shouldn't have to pay taxes, either, because there's a law requiring it. Charity - that's what the government should get. After all, we conservatives are compassionate.)
Chomsky is not anti-American. Period. He disagrees, as do many people, with what the Bush Administration is doing. If you take a typically conservative position, "if it's on my side, it's perfect, and if it's not it is totally worthless", you miss out on the richness of most of the world.
To dismiss Chomsky as stupid and unAmerican is childish, at best. It's a bit like calling, well, what Republican intellectual is there? George Will? Nope. William Safire is as close as I can think of. So, calling Safire dumb would only demonstrate ignorance. He's a bright guy. I would want to debate him to learn, wouldn't want to debate him if there were to be a winner and loser.
Understanding, by the way, is not necessarily agreement.
I can understand over-eager American forces would blow away a wedding party hoping they could get medals if it turned out to be hostile.
I cannot agree with the ROEs which allow such irresponsible conduct. (No, repeat NO, evidence of AA was found, and of the 45 or so people killed, NONE of them were combatants. Kinda sounds like terrorism to me, except it was an military under orders.)
Anyway, until one can understand and THEN disagree with Chomsky, they embarrass themselves with the knee-jerk, my country can do no wrong, never has, and never will unless a Democrat is elected, and then my country can do no right attitudes.
I mean, look at the intellectual level of some of these posts and tell me they can figure out something with two sides.
And they accuse me of peeing on their legs. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction. It's warm, wet, what's to not like? P-mail to us hounds.
Arf
BTW - GWB is NOT America. He is a temporary wart on the blighted butt of one political party. He will be gone, as are Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, etc., but America will need to recover from him. We grew from the legacy of many of them.
