Religious wars

Interesting link, but nothing I didn't already know. Sorry Britain doesn't have a First Amendment, but that's not my fault.

The idea that there wouldn't be any religious wars if not for Christianity is rather naive. Like there weren't any such wars thousands of years ago?

There is not a single civilization in recorded history, long before Christ, or even Jehovah, that does not have somewhere in its closet the kind of atrocities against their fellow man that have been a prominent feature of our history.

The example of the murder of Hypatia at Alexandria is mentioned, while ignoring the fact that the non-Christian Alexander didn't exactly distinguish himself as an example of kindness and gentleness to his fellow human being either.

Laying man's inhumanity to man at the feet of monotheism, which frankly means Christianity and Judaism, the Western religions most hated by the Left, is ridiculous.

A lot of this anti-religious stuff is rooted in the kind of personality that really hates to have anyone tell them what to do, even God. Note that a lot of these people gravitate toward other non-deity superstitions like paganism, or "survival after death" without the inconvenience of having to behave a certain way or confront a deity. Religions that you can keep in a crystal on the shelf are ever so much more comfortable than the idea that the creator of the world may have a personal interest in how you conduct yourself.

The fact that the Islamic world--which used to be a lot more tolerant of new ideas than it is now--fueled the Renaissance (along with the recovery of Greek ideas) is old news to any scientist. A quick look at the Arab names of many of the mathematical terms we use now, or the names of many stars in the sky, would drop a clue on us if nothing else did.

Of course, that was centuries ago. What has the Islamic world done for us lately?
