(If you'll notice, the folks on this board still have not been able to define "terrorism" in any manner which excludes the US as a terrorist organization.)
It is easier to hate than understand. Hate gratifies the ego, understanding the soul, and there is no contest between ego and soul until one has endured some crucible.
Understand does NOT mean accept. It means to realize how people, for instance, can learn to hate so much they will commit suicide for their cause. And only then can something constructive be done to end conflict. Hate does not breed peace - hardly a bulletin.
For a great, absolutely super explanation as to how a young American male goes from ego to soul there is a book by Philip J. Caputo, "A Rumor of War". He made the trip, even through a court-martial in the Nam for, of all things, murder.
It may well be that they don't make 'em like him any more, though. Professional sports with their win at any price, wink-and-nod at drugs, Bill Clinton's attack on the nations sense of morality, and the unabashedly dishonest business practices of the principles of the current administration have led Americans to neither expect much from their political leadership OR get much.
