Yes, the modern UFO stories started with Kenneth Arnold's seeing a meteorological phenomenon that was baptised flying soucers, followed 15 days later by the Roswell incident (a military experiment).
The alien abduction stories only affect the USA (and extremely rarely anywhere else in the world) which shows it to be more like a cultural phenomenon.
