<So, if it's not possible to jam any more people into cars jammed on to the overburdened roads, what alternative exists besides mass transit?
Yeah. Sandblast the goddam carpool diamond markers off the road. Bingo. For the price of a sandblasting truck you now have a new lane on almost every freeway in the area. The beauty of this is that it can be tested for no cost whatsoever: simply declare a three to six month moratorium on diamond lane penalties, and see what happens to the traffic.
A lot of people in my neck of the woods are pissed off about this, since we voted in a tax increase for road improvements some years back, and they widened the freeway and then painted diamonds on the new lanes. I don't get my taxes back either.
Don't look for this to happen, since nobody who set this crap up wants to have it proven that their left-wing social engineering brain fart didn't work.
