Add the costs of all the secondary effects of not having mass transit and it more than pays for itself.
The highways that have to be expanded, the parking that has to be provided, located in some of the most expensive land in the locale. And more.
Mary Anne has provided many other examples, even here, in a town of less than 5000 we have a transit system. Buses, they provide transportation to many who for whatever reason cannot afford or are unable to drive an automobile. We have a large number of elderly who would not be able to access health care, food shopping etc without it.
The system also backs up the school transportation system, moving children from school to school, little children from daycare to kndertgarten.
Does it pay for itself? Of course not, between city, state and federal funding it manages to get by. But without it the secondary costs would far outwiegh the money put into it.
