That question is used as the ultimate proof of God by evangelicals. How that leads to the Old Testament and the New Testament is beyond me, but not them. Their stance is that if you can't answer that question any other way you have to say God did it. QED.

Anyway, aside from curiousity there is no reason for Man to know those. They are a luxury, a fascinating, curious, wonderful luxury. The job of humans is to contribute toward the welfare of our fellow humans. And for that we get the experience while we are here.

(Nonetheless, the greatest carnages this world has seen have been in the name of religion. And oil, or oil and religion.)

But as to the ultimate beginnings, Man doesn't need to know them, they are simply curiosities Man seeks to know rather than resolve the real difficulties we have with each other.
