After fire, what's the worst non-deliberate damage you can think of to happen to a library?
Water
This, from the front page of the Jan. 21 Centre Daily Times:
Centre Hall library flood leaves books damaged
This is my library, the one closest to me, the one I spend Fridays in because they have no time limit on their public-access computers; where I have gotten to know the staff and have pitched in with impromptu volunteerism... It also serves as the library for the elementary school on the adjacent land. On Friday afternoons, the three kindergarten classes take turns walking a hundred yards or so to have two or three books read to them - then they get to check out one book each (as long as they've returned the previous one). Well, they used to.
The online version of the article omits a photograph I saw in the paper that - because I know the place so well - fair to broke my heart. Also missing is a sidebar directing monetary donations to
Centre County Federation of Public Libraries
200 North Allegheny Street
Bellefonte, PA 16823
with a proviso that they are not set up to accept donations of books.
