<I hope this grand mental breakdown eventually leads to a more coherent, thoughtful Left. It is possible. They weren't always this way.

So cheer up!



I wish I could be as optimistic about a "more coherent, thoughtful Left." Unfortunately, most of the leadership of the modern Left is the remnants after a decades-long series of events that weeded out those leftists and liberals amenable to being convinced by facts and history. Stalin, the Berlin Wall, the invasion of Czechoslavakia, the Cultural Revolution, Pol Pot, and other such incidents rubbed the Left's nose into the dark heart of their collectivism. Many left the movement, but many didn't.

Films of Saddam eating boiled babies for breakfast won't convince these people, which takes a lot of fun out of the "I told you so" routine. Fortunately, the leftist and liberal rank and file tend to be a lot more reasonable than the leaders, and I think we will see a lot of changed minds there.
