We can look at socialism as it has actually been practiced and learn what a foolish mistake it is. Germany is but one example of many. Holding out hope that the mistakes of a fundamentally flawed system, from both an economic and human nature perspective, isn't wise at all.
Or, as someone wisely observed, "One definition of insanity is doing the same things over and again and somehow expecting a different outcome."
