I, more than anyone else, can appreciate the motivation to engage these folks in debate. Unfortunately, people like Gary are deeply dependent upon their unworldly views in order to cope with a real world that just doesn't work for them. That's why you get the hostile reaction.
I think its important to engage and challenge these folks, but I think its best done by maintaining one's composure and dignity. Keep in mind that you've won the arguement before its even begun so there's no reason to get tangled in the emotion of the moment.
